Study in Canberra from India: Universities, Rent and Living Costs

Canberra is Australia’s capital, a planned city with one very large research university, a growing second one, and a job market built around government and policy. It is small, quiet and cold in winter. This guide uses figures checked in October 2026. Visa fees, funds and work rules are in our Australia student visa guide.

Quick facts

Main universities Australian National University (ANU), University of Canberra, Australian Catholic University (Signadou campus)
Median rent, whole dwellings A$706 a week, up 3.2% over the year, the slowest rise of the capitals we cover
A room in a share house No reliable published figure. Check Flatmates and university housing for live prices.
Transport concession International students have been reported as eligible for concession fares on MyWay+. Confirm with Transport Canberra.
Time difference from India 4.5 hours ahead, or 5.5 hours during daylight saving (early October to early April)
Climate Cold winters with frost, hot dry summers

Universities

  • Australian National University: in Acton, beside the city centre. It is a research-focused university with strong links to government, policy and science. ANU appears in the Department of Education’s allocation reports, so ask about visa timing before you accept an offer.
  • University of Canberra: at Bruce in the north-west, with a smaller campus feel and professional courses such as health and education.
  • Australian Catholic University: the Signadou campus is in Watson, in the north.

What it costs

The median weekly rent across all Canberra dwellings was A$706 in the June quarter of 2026 (Cotality). That is for a whole home, and it is higher than Melbourne (A$641) and Adelaide (A$662) but below Brisbane (A$734). Rents rose 3.2% over the year, the slowest rise of the seven cities in our guides. A good share of students live in university residences or in share houses in Acton, Braddon and Turner.

The visa living-cost benchmark of A$29,710 applies equally in every city. Because there is no solid published figure for Canberra share rooms, get quotes from the university’s own accommodation office and from live listings before you finalise a budget. The Study Australia cost of living tool helps for the rest.

Where students live

  • ANU: Acton, Braddon, Turner, the city centre, Kingston.
  • University of Canberra: Bruce, Belconnen, Kaleen.
  • ACU: Watson, Dickson, Lyneham.

Main student accommodation providers in Canberra

Canberra works differently from the bigger capitals. Much student housing is run by the universities themselves, and the main private operator, UniLodge, manages many of the ANU and University of Canberra buildings. This is a guide to the main options, not a ranking, and prices are “from” prices that vary by room type and year.

Provider What it offers in Canberra Indicative starting price
ANU residences About 19 options on or beside the Acton campus, including Fenner Hall, Ursula Hall, Bruce Hall, Burgmann College, Wright Hall, Graduate House and Davey Lodge. Some are catered, some self-catered, and some are postgraduate only. From A$319 a week (Ursula Hall Laurus Wing, postgraduate) and A$395 (Fenner Hall, undergraduate). Catered halls such as Ursula Main Wing start at A$512, Bruce Hall Main Wing at A$595 and Burgmann College at A$629 (ANU’s site, 2027 applications).
UniLodge at ANU Lodges near the Acton campus, including Warrumbul, Kinloch and Lena Karmel Check UniLodge’s site for current rates
UniLodge at UC UC Lodge, Cooper Lodge, Weeden Lodge, Campus West and Guginya near the University of Canberra at Bruce Roughly A$220 to A$310 a week at some buildings, according to a listing site
Student Living by UniLodge City buildings including Academie House and Student Living on Gould Check UniLodge’s site for current rates

ANU is already taking applications for 2027, so apply as soon as you hold an offer. Catered halls cost more but remove the need to buy and cook all your own food. Because there is no solid published figure for Canberra share rooms, compare the hall price with live listings before you decide. Book through the university or the provider’s own website, ask what happens to your deposit if your visa is refused, and check the contract length.

Getting around

Transport Canberra runs buses and a light rail line from Gungahlin to the city. The MyWay+ card is the usual way to pay. Canberra is more spread out than its size suggests, so living near campus or a main bus route matters more than in a dense city. Concession fares have been reported as available to international students, but check the current rules.

Weather and daily life

Canberra is inland and high, so winters are properly cold, with frosts and chilly mornings, and summer days can be hot. Pack a real winter coat. The city is quiet compared with Sydney or Melbourne, which suits focused study but means a smaller nightlife and events scene.

Is Canberra the right city for you?

Canberra suits you if your interests are policy, politics, science or public sector work, or if you want a compact, quiet city. The job market outside government and related fields is smaller than in the big capitals, so think about your own career path. If you want a bigger market, look at Sydney or Melbourne.

Questions students ask

Is Canberra expensive?

Median rent is mid-range among Australian capitals, above Melbourne and Adelaide and below Brisbane, Perth and Sydney.

Do I need a car in Canberra?

Many students manage without one by living near campus or a main bus route. Some outer areas are hard to reach by public transport, so check routes first.

Can I work part-time?

Yes, up to 48 hours per fortnight during term. See the visa guide for the rules.

Need help choosing a city or a place to live?
